DAS Urban: How to Empower Urban PV with Smart Shutdown System and Lightweight Module

2025-06-23

The SNEC 2025 recently concluded in Shanghai, drawing global attention as the year's premier expo in the solar industry. During the event, Mr. Yugeng Yin, General Manager of DAS Electric, was invited to speak at the 3rd China International PV & Energy Storage Conference, presenting a keynote titled "One-second Shutdown and Parallel Short-circuit Technology: Safeguarding PV Power Generation". He also spoke at the 2nd Photovoltaic Building Fire Safety Forum, where he introduced the DAS Solar Smart Rapid Shutdown System. Additionally, Mr. Lei Jie, Director of DAS Solar Module R&D Center, delivered a presentation on "Lightweight Module Technology and Multi-scenario Applications" at the booth.

With the growing adoption of PV systems, installed solar capacity has surged year after year, placing safety and O&M at the forefront of industry attention. Recent reports of PV-related fires have once again underscored the urgent need to reinforce safety measures.

DAS Solar's smart rapid shutdown system was developed in response to this need, especially for urban distributed PV. The system provides all-around protection for personnel, equipment, and grid stability. The technology marks a major breakthrough across multiple dimensions: On the detection side, it employs high-frequency current transformers and DC arc fault detection at the node level, enabling precise current anomaly identification. On the analysis side, it uses both time-domain and frequency-domain signal processing to improve detection accuracy. Once an arc fault is detected, the system reacts within milliseconds, initiating shutdown in 20ms and reducing the string voltage to 0V within one second, effectively protecting modules and related equipment.

The system uniquely integrates both wired communication and wireless emergency modes, ensuring automatic shutdown even during communication failures or device malfunctions. Built-in arc fault detection and pre-alarm functions eliminate fire risks at the source. Furthermore, its user-friendly design simplifies installation, reduces construction costs, and requires no external DC power, drawing power directly from the module. For older PV systems, it offers a dual-mode compatibility framework, ensuring wide applicability and flexible integration. Already deployed in several projects, the system has earned high praise from stakeholders for its exceptional reliability and safety.

Addressing urban architecture's demand for lightweight, aesthetically pleasing solar solutions, DAS Solar has launched two innovative product lines: the lightweight and the lightweight steel series. Both are engineered to meet urban requirements of reduced weight, visual harmony, and easy installation, setting a new benchmark for low-carbon urban solar development.

The lightweight modules leverage advanced materials to reduce weight by 70% compared to conventional modules. The front layer features UV-resistant, low-glare coatings that enhance visual comfort while minimizing light pollution. The patented corrugated aluminum composite backsheet offers high strength, zero deformation, excellent water resistance, heat dissipation, and fire protection, making it adaptable across diverse scenarios. Installation is straightforward, often requiring no additional support beams, and allows for direct adhesion, improving efficiency by up to 40%. These modules also support full life-cycle disassembly and maintenance and come with industry-leading material and power warranties.

The lightweight steel series combines high structural integrity with a 50% weight reduction. It features 1.1mm ultra-thin chemically tempered glass and an integrated mounting bracket system that reduces construction complexity and cost. This makes rooftop retrofitting and urban solar deployment faster and more accessible.

Balcony PV, one of the most promising forms of distributed solar for urban environments, is gaining traction due to its spatial versatility and technical compatibility. It enables idle spaces—such as balconies and facades—to be transformed into micro energy stations. With customized colors and seamless building integration, these solutions offer safety, energy generation, and visual appeal in a single package, delivering a low-investment, high-return option for urban households.

The expansion of urban PV demands both safety and convenience. DAS Solar's new rapid shutdown system and lightweight modules mark a targeted innovation designed specifically for city use. Moving forward, the company will continue investing in R&D to drive the evolution of urban solar technologies, contributing to the creation of safe, efficient, and visually integrated urban energy ecosystems.
